On Monday, the 2022 WTA Washington Citi Open's opening round will feature Jessica Pegula and Hailey Baptiste.
The year 2022 has been challenging for American Hailey Baptiste, age 20. She has made some strides but still has a ways to go; prior to dropping to #148, she had a career-high ranking of #1119. The young woman, who has a record of 18-13 and a lengthy hiatus from the tour, is returning to Washington, D.C., where she was born. After advancing through the qualifiers, she played in her final match in the French Open, where she retired against Anhelina Kalinina in the first set. Baptiste’s season has largely consisted of qualifying victories and early losses. Her notable outcomes include appearances in the second round of the Australian Open and Guadalajara. Her chances of progressing far in the Citi Open are minimal because she doesn’t have any notable awards or victories to her resume (apart from a doubles title in ITF Orlando).
Jessica Pegula, the tournament’s top seed and current world No. 7, is one of the favourites to win. Her year has been outstanding, with a record of 25-13 with participation in the penultimate rounds of the Australian Open, Miami Open, and French Open. Jessica has done well to repeatedly demonstrate her mettle. She finished second in the Madrid Open as well. Pegula has defeated a few well-known athletes during the course of the season, including Bianca Andreescu, Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari, Elena Rybakina, Paula Badosa, and Anhelina Kalinina. After Wimbledon, the 28-year-old, like most players, took some time off the circuit to unwind and get ready for the US swing.
Jessica Pegula and Hailey Baptiste will face each other in the first round of the 2022 Citi open on Monday, August 1. The WTA 500 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.
