Alize Cornet, the eighth-seeded Frenchwoman, defeated Shuai Zhang, the eighth-seeded Chinese player, 6-4, 6-2, on Thursday evening at Cleveland’s renowned Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Flats West Bank to advance to the semifinals of Tennis in the Land. On Thursday night, the seventh-seeded Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus defeated the American Madison Brengle 6-4, 6-1, moving on to the Tennis in the Land semifinals. Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Alize Cornet have faced off twice on hard courts, with Sasnovich winning both matches to take a 2-0 lead in the all-time series. In a WTA tour-level match, Alize Cornet and Aliaksandra Sasnovich will clash for the third time.
Given the current form of the other two players, it appears that this match will determine who will finish second in the final. But neither of these players will see it that way, and it should be a fascinating encounter to watch. Aliaksandra Sasnovich has so far proven to be quite persuasive in Cleveland. She has effectively defended her serve and played good, aggressive tennis off the ground. She’ll have to keep this up in the face of a tough competitor in Cornet. Even on her worst day, the French professional is a formidable foe who never surrenders easily. Sasnovich should win if she keeps striking the ball as well as she has all week.
