Tuesday's first round of the 2022 ATP Hamburg Open will see Argentine Federico Coria taking against Colombian Daniel Galan.
Interesting player Federico Coria plays virtually exclusively on clay. Although he is capable of playing on various surfaces, he primarily succeeds on clay. With a score of 24-21, of which 22-17 were on clay, he has had a passable year. Despite having no lethal weapons at his disposal, the Argentine moves well. He simply executes the most of it fairly effectively and scores points with his deliberate play and patience. Coria will do the job, even though he won’t absolutely destroy you on the court. He had a good showing last week in Bastad, winning one set and then giving Andrey Rublev some trouble in the second round. He now focuses his attention on Hamburg and a player who recently destroyed him. Galan’s forehand typically caused him problems in the post, so he needs to find a way to get through it.
Daniel Galan has had a very successful year, going 34-19 overall, but the problem is that he struggled mightily in the greatest of competitions. He wasn’t as successful on the ATP Tour this year as he was last year, when he was. He lost his spot in the top 100 and is now frantically attempting to regain it. Be careful of this when looking at the stats and other information since the challenger tour hosted the majority of the victories this year. Yes, he had a fantastic year, but the challenger Tour’s level of competition was much to blame for that. He played well on other surfaces as well, but clay accounted for the majority of those victories (28-14). He failed to reach the Bastad main draw through qualifiers but got it done in Hamburg. The German clay should suit his game a bit more albeit he is a streaky player as well.
Federico Coria and Daniel Galan will take on each other on Tuesday, July 19 in the first round of the 2022 ATP Hamburg European open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 18 and conclude on July 24 this year.
