Marin Cilic and Maximilian Marterer are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, August 30.
Marin Cilic would have preferred to perform significantly better than he did at the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Masters. He advanced to the third round in both tournaments, with solid victories over strong opponents, but he was eliminated in the round of 16. At the former, he lost to Tommy Paul despite being a 7/10 favorite to win, while at the latter, it took Carlos Alcaraz to knock him out, both losses in straight sets. Cilic has won just 13 of his 22 hard court matches this season, with his best performance coming in the fourth round of the Australian Open. The Croat has previously won this tournament, making him one of the few players other than the Big Four to have won a Grand Slam.
Maximilian Marterer, who was once ranked 45th in the world, has dropped to outside the top 150 and is now more interested in the Challenger circuit than the top-level ATP tournaments. As a result, he has only competed in two ATP tournaments this season, both Grand Slams, the Australian Open and Wimbledon. In both of those tournaments, he had to qualify in order to enter the main draw. While Marterer lost his opener at the Australian Open, he surprised Aljaz Bedene in the first round of Wimbledon to record his only win of the season. Now, three qualifying victories at the US Open later, he has advanced to the main draw here, but will face Marin Cilic.
Marin Cilic and Maximilian Marterer are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, August 30.
