This year, Francisco Cerundolo will compete in his first U.S. Open. The World No. 27 has moved up 100 spots in the rankings since the beginning of the year, but he will have his hands full in the first round against Andy Murray, a past champion. Before being stopped by Casper Ruud in the semifinals of the Miami tournament, Cerundolo defeated some notable opponents. He also benefited from a few retirements along the road, but generally he performed admirably throughout the competition. Cerundolo has had a really good year so far. In addition to Miami, he also advanced to the semifinals in Rio de Janeiro and Hamburg. He lost his opening round matches at the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters, so his recent form is a little shaky. He will find solace in the fact that both of those defeats came in three-set matches to higher-ranked opponents. Cerundolo lost a hard-fought match to Roberto Bautista Agut in Cincinnati after also losing to Karen Khachanov in Montreal.

This year, Andy Murray has improved moving up the rankings from 134 at the start of the year to 49 at the moment. He will hope to make up for his lack of consistency in the major tournaments in the remaining weeks of the season. However, given that he is now struggling with cramps during matches, it might not happen right away at the U.S. Open. While he appears to have gradually recovered from his back and groin pain, he has just begun to have another condition that could affect how well he performs at Flushing Meadows. The 35-year-old, who is 20-14 this season, advanced to the finals in Sydney and Stuttgart this year, but he was unable to claim his first championship since 2019. He defeated Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open final to claim the championship for the year 2012. In the competition, he has a record of 46-14, which includes a second-place result in 2008.
