On Tuesday, Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina will face Daniel Altmaier of Germany in the first round of 2022 ATP Hamburg open.
Francisco Cerundolo won the trophy in a tour-level competition in Bastad last week, less than 18 months after his younger brother Juan Manuel Cerundolo took home the prize in Cordoba. As the underdog in three of the five matches, he prevailed over opponents like Casper Ruud and Sebastian Baez. The young Argentine player enjoyed some success on the South American clay in 2021 and 2022 at this level, but that performance in Bastad was his first triumph on the European clay. Earlier this year, during the European clay swing, he had a difficult time winning games and experienced significant defeats at the hands of Egor Gerasimov and Alejandro Moro Canas.
On German soil, Daniel Altmaier is currently on a three-match losing run (major tour). He lost to Miomir Kecmanovic in Munich, Oscar Otte in the opening round of Stuttgart, and Nick Kyrgios in the opening round of Halle after defeating fellow countryman Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round of the ATP Munich tournament back in April 2022. Furthermore, Horacio Zeballos in 2017, Martin Klizan in 2019, and Filip Krajinovic in 2021 were all losers in the German’s previous three encounters in Hamburg. Even worse, he has a dismal record this year, winning just three of his 17 opening-round matches on the main tour.
Francisco Cerundolo and Daniel Altmaier will take on each other on Tuesday, July 19 in the first round of the 2022 ATP Hamburg European open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 18 and conclude on July 24 this year.
