In Buenos Aires, Bernabe Zapata Miralles is having a moment. To reach his first Tour semifinal, the 26-year-old Spaniard defeated two ranked local favourites in back-to-back matches. Zapata Miralles stunned the 2021 champion and last year’s runner-up, Diego Schwartzman, in the round of 16 on Thursday. He backed up his 6-1, 6-3 win with another upset on Friday, defeating fifth seed Francisco Cerundolo in a thrilling three-set match. Zapata Miralles won the first set with a lone break in the fourth game. He was subsequently edged by Cerundolo in a neck and neck second set in which both players broke each other twice before the fifth seed won the tiebreak. The Argentine had five chances to break Zapata Miralles’ serve in the final set, but the latter saved all of them and capitalised on one of the two breaking chances he created for himself. The world number. 74 advanced to his first semifinal after defeating the world no. 30 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 in two hours and 35 minutes.

Alcaraz is back on court after an injury hiatus, and the world no. 2 advanced to the semifinals of the Buenos Aires Open with a straight sets triumph over Dusan Lajovic in the quarterfinals on Friday. The top seed was met with stiff opposition from the Serb in the first set, with Lajovic twice battling back from a break down to stay on serve. Yet a third break in the tenth game proved decisive for Carlos Alcaraz, who went up one set to love. In the second set, Alcaraz improved his performance. He saved both break points he faced in the set and converted one of the three break chances he had to win 6-4, 6-2. The 19-year-old is coming off a 57-13 season in which he won five tournaments, including the US Open, and finished second twice. He suffered an abdominal injury at the Paris Masters in November, forcing him to miss the Australian tournaments this year. He began his 2023 campaign in Buenos Aires with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 triumph over another Serbian, Laslo Djere, in the round of 16. He performed better in the following match and will be hoping for an even stronger performance in the semifinal. With a victory on Saturday, the six-time tour-level champion will attempt to reach a ninth final.
