When Cameron Norrie made his lone appearance at the ATP Buenos Aires tournament in 2019, he was ranked #65 in the world. He lost to Rogerio Dutra Silva in the qualifying round in three sets. He is now a top-20 player and the second seed in this week’s main draw, but a lot has changed since then. The British player has improved significantly over the past two seasons on all surfaces, but his improvement on clay is especially noteworthy because he did not play a competitive match on the surface for four straight seasons between 2014 and 2017 and only briefly used it before becoming a main tour player.
He hasn’t played much on clay, but he’s still managed to perform admirably at the highest level on the surface. In a clay tournament in Lyon five years ago, he made his debut on the main tour, and he went on to win the tournament the following year. The former world #8’s stellar start to the season has been somewhat overshadowed by two upsets at the hands of Richard Gasquet in the Auckland championship match and Jiri Lehecka in the third round of the Australian Open.
Facundo Diaz Acosta won the opening round of the ATP Buenos Aires tournament despite Federico Coria’s long week in Cordoba (runner-up). On his third attempt, he won his first match in Buenos Aires by defeating last week’s ATP Cordoba runner-up in two close sets, 7-6 7-5. While the 22-year-old Argentine has only won 50 matches in his career on clay, Cameron Norrie has amassed 71 victories on the surface since the start of 2021, with the majority of those victories coming on South American clay. However, he lacks main tour experience, and this will be his first-ever match in the second round of a tour-level competition.
