Lucia Bronzetti, who advanced to the semifinals in Rabat, had a strong start to the competition by beating Wang Xiyu of China on Tuesday. Bronzetti prevailed 6-3, 6-3 after saving half of the four breakpoints she faced and converting five of her eight total opportunities. At the Chiasso Open in Switzerland, the 23-year-old had won her sixth ITF championship (and her first this year). She made an impression this year in Miami as well, as she played as a fortunate loser and advanced to the Round of 16. Bronzetti will be attempting to reach the last eight for the second consecutive year in 2022.

Elina Avanesyan and Lucia Bronzetti have never met. Elina Avanesyan of Russia overcame Carolina Alves once more on Tuesday to move to the next round of qualification, two days after defeating the Brazilian in the previous round. Avanesyan required three sets on Tuesday to defeat the fortunate loser, but on Sunday she just needed two sets to advance to the main event. After top seed Martina Trevisan withdrew due to an injury, Alves was placed in the main draw. In the first qualifying round, Avanesyan had defeated Nuria Brancaccio of Italy, and in the subsequent qualifying round, she had defeated Alves. Bronzetti will be slight favourite in this contest.

Tournament format

The 2022 Palermo Open will have five rounds of play for WTA competitors. These are the first round, second round, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The tournament is scheduled to be held from July 18 to July 24, but the qualifiers will commence from July 16 for women’s categories.
