Australia’s Jaimee Fourlis was defeated by second-seeded Yulia Putintseva in the first round on Tuesday. The world No. 39 rated Kazakh won 6-3, 6-1 in only one hour and fifteen minutes. In contrast to her opponent, who could only generate two break chances during the match, Putintseva successfully converted four break points in the first set and two in the second. Even though she won both of them in the first set, she was unable to match Putintseva’s level. She had lost in the first round of her previous encounters in Palermo, but this time she had a decent chance of making it to the round of eight.

Tuesday saw Diane Parry, 86 in the world, defeat American Lauren Davis in a brave display. The fascinating match started out with two breaks before the 19-year-old Frenchwoman grabbed charge, winning four straight games to establish a 5-2 lead. Parry attempted to rally and finish the set, but Davis stopped him. She made the first set tiebreak mandatory, which Parry ultimately won. She has not yet advanced to a quarterfinal on the tour this year, despite having her greatest tour-level performances in third round matches at Wimbledon and the French Open.

Tournament format

The 2022 Palermo Open will have five rounds of play for WTA competitors. These are the first round, second round, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The tournament is scheduled to be held from July 18 to July 24, but the qualifiers will commence from July 16 for women’s categories.
