In the opening round at ATP Newport, Benjamin Bonzi almost avoided defeat against the inexperienced William Blumberg. The American qualifier won the opening set easily and had eight breakpoint opportunities early in the second set, but the Frenchman saved all of them and went on to win the match, 2-6 6-3 6-2. His greatest season on grass (7/2 in 2021) will be achieved with one more victory after today, which was his seventh victory on grass this year. His best performance thus far on this grass swing was defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in a set and making it to the semifinals in Mallorca and Stuttgart.

After defeating Pedja Krstin and Mirza Basic in straight sets in the qualifying rounds, Christopher Eubanks defeated a shaky Dominik Koepfer in the first round, 6-4 7-5. The American reached this stage of the competition once in 2019 and was defeated by Ilya Ivashka in two straight sets. The global #163 has played four second-round matches on the main tour (all in the USA) and lost them all, save for one in 2022 against Casper Ruud at the Indian Wells Masters. This is after making his first appearance in the quarterfinals on the main tour in Atlanta back in 2017. This will be the first time when Bonzi will face Eubanks head to head in a match.
