Saturday's semifinal of the 2022 WTA Poland Open pits World No. 190 Kateryna Baindl of Ukraine against World No. 108 Ana Bogdan of Romania.
Ana Bogdan kept up her impressive play at the Poland Open, defeating Laura Pigossi in the quarterfinal on Friday in straight sets to advance to the semifinals. Before Pigossi could take a point in either set, the Romanian raced to 5-0 leads in both. Pigossi was only able to win one game in each set as Bogdan defeated him 6-1, 6-1 in just 66 minutes. Bogdan easily advanced into her first tour-level semifinal of the year by converting 6 of 8 break points and saving 4 of 5 of her own. The 29-year-old, who earlier this year won her 14th ITF title in France, reached the semifinals of a WTA 125 competition in Paris in May.
With a come-from-behind victory over Petra Martic, the eighth seed, on Friday, lucky loser Kateryna Baindl extended her incredible run in the competition. After failing to hold serve even once in the first set, Baindl fell behind 0-2 in the second before beginning the comeback. In order to make the final, she broke Martic three times in the second. Baindl broke in the fourth game of the third set, but Martic erased the advantage in the seventh game. In the tenth game, Baindl broke again to win the match 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Ukrainian, who gained entry into the main draw as a lucky loser, defeated Sara Errani 6-2, 3-0 (ret) in the second round after defeating defending champion Maryna Zanevska 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round.
Kateryna Baindl and Ana Bogdan will face each other in the semifinal round of the 2022 WTA Poland Open on Saturday, July 30. The WTA 250 competition is scheduled to start from July 25 and end on July 31 this year.
