Even though she didn’t advance past the first round in two of those five competitions, Rebecca Marino should be reasonably happy with her North American tour. She advanced to the quarterfinals in Washington, D.C., and Granby, and for the first time in 11 years, she also advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam. She has already made two of her six quarterfinal appearances in her career in the 2022 season alone, including the one in Washington, D.C., when she defeated Venus Williams and Andrea Petkovic. It aligns quite well with her other hard-court achievements this year, including the W60 Arcadia victory and two runner-up places in ITF tournaments in Mexico.
Prior to the pandemic, Anna Blinkova was barely outside the top 50, but she has since fallen more than a hundred spots. Early in the season, she reached four finals, including one at 125K Saint-Malo and two W60s, but they did not help her long-term comeback to form. Since her Saint-Malo final in May, the Russian has exited every main draw match in the first or second round. She recently lost in qualifying to Chloe Paquet at Flushing Meadows and has lost five straight games to players ranked in the top 100, most recently to Bernarda Pera in Concord.
