On Monday in the round of 32 of the WTA Chennai open 2022 Astra Sharma of Australia will face Katarzyna Kawa of Poland.
Astra Sharma defeated players like Ons Jabeur, the 27th-ranked player in the world at the time, and Camila Osorio her way to reaching her second career final and winning her first championship in Charleston just about 17 months ago. But in a startling turn of events, the former global No. 84 is now just hanging on to the top 200. She is 3-9 in tour-level main draw matches this year and hasn’t achieved one of those victories since beating two players below the top 200 to advance to the quarterfinals in Rabat in May. She just lost in qualifying at the US Open, where she also recorded her first back-to-back victories on a hard court of the year.
Just after the lockdown, Katarzyna Kawa reached her career-high rating of no. 112, but less than two years later, she started to lose momentum. She has managed a 14–15 record this year across all divisions, and her first victory didn’t come until the W100 Bonita Springs clay final in early May. In recent years, the Polish player, who turns 30 in a few weeks, has created two surprises on the tour, both on clay. She qualified for Jurmala 2019 and advanced to the quarterfinals. A year later, in Gdynia, she was a few points from from winning the WTA title there.
Astra Sharma and Katarzyna Kawa are scheduled to face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 WTA Chennai Open on Monday, September 12. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 12 and end on September 18.
