In the opening round of the 2022 US Open, Matteo Berrettini, rated 15th in the world, will take on Bolivia's Hugo Dellien, who is ranked 73rd.
After recovering from his arm injury, Matteo Berrettini appeared to be on the upswing after taking home back-to-back championships at the Queen’s Club and Stuttgart tournaments. He was knocked out of Wimbledon by a last-minute match of Covid-19, but he bounced back admirably in his debut competition on the clay courts of Gstaad. There, he advanced to the final before losing to Andrey Rublev. Strangely, he has since lost back-to-back matches in the first round in Montreal and Cincinnati, falling to Pablo Carreno-Busta and Frances Tiafoe respectively. A quarterfinalist the year before and a US Open semifinalist in 2019. Berrettini will be hoping to begin his season here with a victory that will increase his self-confidence.
Dellien has never competed in a competition on a hard court due to his dislike of the latter surfaces and love of clay courts. Yes, Hugo Dellien hasn’t competed in the Australian Open or any of the Masters events on hard courts for a variety of reasons. Dellien won’t be competing in the Canadian Open, Indian Wells, Miami, or Cincinnati this year. He will therefore be playing his first major draw match on this surface since his appearance at the 2021 Australian Open when he steps onto the court for his opening US Open round match against Berrettini. Despite Berrettini’s unexpected decline in performance, expecting too much of the Bolivian number one would be unreasonable.
Matteo Berrettini and Hugo Dellien are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Monday, August 29. The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.
