Over the past 20 days or so, Constant Lestienne has experienced his best spell of success. In San Diego, where he made his first main-draw appearance on the main tour this year, he achieved his first quarterfinal finish. The following week in Tel Aviv, he advanced even farther by pulling off three straight upsets against Adrian Mannarino, Emil Ruusuvuori, and Maxime Cressy. Another successful campaign this week in Gijon would give the Frenchman even more confidence and help him feel like he belongs at this level. Since the start of the 2021 season, the 30-year-results old’s have improved after spending the majority of his career playing inconsistent tennis and earning average results on the lower-level circuits.
When he lost the final to fellow countryman Francisco Cerundolo in Bastad a few months ago, Sebastian Baez’s season was utterly wrecked. He then lost all of his subsequent nine matches as well. At that point, he was just one winnable match away from winning his second ATP championship of the season. However, it was his success on the indoor hard courts at the Next Gen Finals that gave him the confidence to step up and generate the kind of wins he did on the main circuit in the early portions of the 2022 season. The reigning ATP Estoril winner won six Challenger championships on clay in 2021.
