Victoria Azarenka, who is currently ranked World No. 37, is on track to end the 2022 season on a high note. After a largely disappointing season, the 33-year-old Belarussian will now compete in her first semifinal of the year. Her path to the final four in Guadalajara began with a win over Elina Avanesyan in the first round, followed by Paula Badosa and Madison Keys. She defeated American teenager Coco Gauff in the quarters, 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3, in what proved to be a humbling lesson for the teenager. With these victories, Victoria’s year-to-date record now stands at 24-12. Her other notable performances include quarter final appearances in the Citi Open and the Adelaide International.
Jessica Pegula advanced to the semis after defeating Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-2 in the quarters. After a shaky start to the tournament, the 28-year-old American has produced a stunning turnaround. In the first round, she defeated current Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in three sets, saving three match points along the way. Pegula then defeated Bianca Andreescu in straight sets to keep her title hopes alive. Jessica also made it to the semi-finals in San Diego. She had previously competed in the final rounds in Toronto, Cincinnati, and New York. Pegula is now ranked fifth in the world and has a record of 40-18 for the 2022 season. She has been an absolute revelation this year, with three Grand Slam quarterfinals and five doubles titles.
