Amanda Anisimova is a professional tennis player of Russian and American descent. She currently holds a career-high WTA ranking of No. 21 in the world and has been ranked in the top 100 since she was 17 years old. Anisimova has two WTA Tour titles and has reached three WTA finals. Anisimova is a strong baseliner with strong groundstrokes from both wings. Her two-handed backhand is her most potent weapon, and she hits it with depth, speed, and power on a consistent basis; she produces many winners with her backhand down the line. Her forehand is also powerful, and she hits it flat with a short swing, allowing her to generate sharp angles. She can effectively hit her forehand at any ball height, making her forehand lethal on any surface.

She moves quickly around the court, and her footwork is quick and intricate, allowing her to extend rallies until she has a chance to hit a winner. One of her greatest strengths is her serve return, particularly when returning second serves, where she can neutralise powerful serves with a crosscourt inside-out forehand or a backhand down the line, making her one of the most effective returners on the WTA Tour. Her ball-striking precision, point construction, and powerful groundstrokes make her a formidable opponent on any surface.

Junior Career

Anisimova began playing tennis at a young age, with her father Konstantin as her longtime coach and her older sister also a tennis player. Her parents decided to relocate to Florida when Anisimova was very young in order to provide her with better educational opportunities. Anisimova was ranked as high as No. 2 in the world as a junior. She won the girls’ singles title at the 2017 US Open, as well as two other Grade-A titles. She was also the first American to reach the finals of the French Open girls’ singles event in 14 years.

Senior Career

Anisimova rose to prominence on the WTA Tour at the 2018 Indian Wells Open, where she won her first top-10 victory at the age of 16 against Petra Kvitova. She won her first WTA title in April 2019 at the Copa Colsanitas, at the age of 17, and her second title in January 2022 at the Melbourne Summer Set, at the age of 20. In 2019, she made her first two Grand Slam breakthroughs. She reached the fourth round of the Australian Open by defeating No. 11 Aryna Sabalenka, one of the top contenders for the title. At the French Open, she upset defending champion and world No. 3 Simona Halep to become the tournament’s youngest semifinalist in over a decade. She advanced to the fourth round of a major for the first time in 2022, when she defeated defending champion Naomi Osaka. She reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships while being coached by Andis Juska.
