Petra Kvitova is a professional tennis player from the Czech Republic. Kvitová has 29 career singles titles, including two Majors at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014. She is known for her powerful left-handed groundstrokes and variety. She also earned a bronze medal in singles for the Czech Republic at the 2016 Rio Olympics. On October 31, 2011, she achieved her career-high ranking of world No. 2.

Junior career

Kvitová reached a career-high ranking of world No. 27 as a junior on July 9, 2007. She also had a 35-7 and a 20-9 record in singles and doubles, respectively. Her only Grand Slam tournament appearance as a junior came in 2007 at Wimbledon. In singles, eighth-seeded Kvitová advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Jocelyn Rae and Malena Gordo before falling in straight sets to eventual semifinalist Katarzyna Piter. She competed in doubles with fellow Czech Kateina Vaková, but they were defeated at the first hurdle by Mariana Duque Mario and Michelle Larcher de Brito.

Senior career

Kvitová rose to prominence after defeating world No. 1 Dinara Safina in the third round of the 2009 US Open. Following that, she reached her first Major semifinal at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships. Kvitová then won her first Major title at Wimbledon in 2011, defeating Maria Sharapova in the final and becoming the first player of either gender born in the 1990s to do so. She won the WTA Championships on her debut at the end of the season. She also helped lead the Czech Republic to victory in the Fed Cup that same year, making it the Czech Republic’s first such title as an independent nation.

Kvitová won the US Open Series in 2012 after reaching the semifinals of the Australian and French Opens. That same year, she and Tomas Berdych won the Hopman Cup. She won her second Major title in 2014, defeating Eugenie Bouchard in the final. Following her quarterfinal debut at the US Open in 2015, Kvitová accomplished the feat of reaching at least the quarterfinals of all four Majors. She became the first player in history to win both categories of year-end championships on her debut in 2016, when she won the WTA Elite Trophy. In 2019, she reached her first Major final in nearly five years, finishing runner-up to Naomi Osaka at the Australian Open.
