Felix Auger-Aliassime and Brandon Nakashima are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Firenze Open on October 14.
Number one seed Felix Auger-Aliassime found himself in trouble after a strong start to his first match in Florence, but he finished strong to defeat Oscar Otte in three sets and advance to the quarterfinals. The Canadian beat the German 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2 in two hours and 30 minutes. He got the lone break in the first set before blowing a 3-1 lead in the second, allowing the world no. 55 to come back and win the set in a tiebreak. Auger-Aliassime stepped up his game in the final set, breaking the German twice and winning the match. This is the 13th time this year the World No. 13 has reached the final eight.
Brandon Nakashima, the eighth seed, advanced to the round of 16 with a comfortable win over Turkey’s Altug Celikbilek in round two. The American, who had defeated Richard Gasquet in the first round 6-2, 6-2, needed only an hour and 15 minutes to defeat the Turkish player 6-3, 6-4. While Nakashima did not face a single break point in the first round, he did face one in the second and was unable to save it, but he converted three of five breakpoints. This season, the 29-year-old World No. 46 is 29-20, with the majority of his victories coming on his preferred hard courts. He recently won his first career title in San Diego and can be a difficult player to beat.
