Roberto Carballes Baena and Mikael Ymer will face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Firenze Open October 14.
Roberto Carballes Baena wouldn’t have anticipated anything more than the first-round prize money when he initially arrived in Florence a few days ago, but he has performed remarkably well to defeat Matteo Berrettini and Daniel Elahi Galan, two of the local crowd’s favorites. Before this week, the Spaniard had only won two main-draw matches in ATP events on indoor hard courts (both in 2019), so it came as a bit of a surprise that he produced one of his best victories of his career in these circumstances. The 29-year-old former Italian No. 1 wasn’t at his best during the match, but he still had to battle to win because he dropped the opening set and then fell down 3-5 in the decisive set, 5-7 7-6 7-5 in the 2nd round.
Despite possessing a tonne of talent and ability, Mikael Ymer was unable to move up the rankings, as evidenced by his three-set victory over Aslan Karatsev. Furthermore, he went up a break in the decisive set and afterwards had to rely on his opponent’s fitness to get back into the match, which ended with a score of 6-1 6-7 6-1. He not only allowed the struggling Russian to rebound and equalise the match. The Swedish teenager’s most successful surface this year has been an indoor hardcourt. He had nine wins on the surface out of a possible 14 wins, and he twice made it to the quarterfinals in Montpellier and Metz (L).
Roberto Carballes Baena and Mikael Ymer are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Firenze Open on Friday, October 14. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 10 and end on October 16.
