Yoshihito Nishioka won his second ATP championship (first since ATP Shenzhen 2018) in Seoul earlier this month to mark the resumption of the Asian swing. He beat top-seeded Casper Ruud and the gifted Denis Shapovalov in three of the five matches where he started as the underdog. The Japanese No. 1 player, despite winning the opening set, 6-2 6-7 2-6, couldn’t do much the following week in front of the home crowd in Tokyo because he ran out of steam and lost a three-setter to Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round.

Luca Van Assche started the season by winning his first ITF championship. Earlier this month in Lisbon, he came within one victory of earning his first Challenger title. Now, after overcoming Lucas Miedler and Geoffrey Blancaneaux in three tense sets, he has qualified for the main draw of an ATP event. The teenager, who was born in Belgium, will be making his or her debut in the main draw of a tour-level competition. He had a very successful junior career, winning the Boys’ French Open championship in 2021 and finally rising to the position of Junior #1. He possesses the skill and tenacity to succeed on the professional tour.
