Matteo Arnaldi and Francesco Passaro will take on one another in the round-robin stage of the 2022 ATP Next Gen Finals on November 9.
If Matteo Arnaldi learnt anything this season, it was to persevere to the bitter end, which he did in his ATP Next Gen Finals debut against Brandon Nakashima, a highly ranked opponent. He easily won the opening set, edged the fourth set in the tiebreaker to force a decider, but ultimately fell short, 4-2 3-4 3-4. 4-3 2-4. The Italian player, 21, has won several matches despite being outplayed in the opening set and occasionally trailing by a set and a break disadvantage in the 27 three-setter matches (17-10) that he has played so far in 2022 on the Challenger circuits.
On Tuesday, Francesco Passaro had an easier test, but he was completely outplayed by Jiri Lehecka, failing to even win a set. Only one game in two games, he never appeared to have a chance of winning any of the three sets (1-4 3-4 1-4). In his brief career, he has only achieved one victory on indoor hard courts, but it is also his best result to date. Last month, he established himself in the main draw of a tour-level event by defeating lucky loser Zhizhen Zhang in two tiebreakers.
Matteo Arnaldi and Francesco Passaro are scheduled to take on one another in the round-robin stage of the 2022 ATP Next Gen Finals on November 9. The tournament is scheduled to be held from November 8 to November 12, 2022.
The eight players at the ATP Next Gen Finals 2022 have been divided into two groups, these are the Green group and the Red group. Each player will play one match against everyone in their group and the top two from each will make it through to the semi-finals. The top finisher of one group will face the second finisher of the other. The winner of those two matches will then meet in the final to decide who will win the 2022 ATP Next Gen Finals crown.
