Top ten players Caroline Garcia and Aryna Sabalenka will compete in the 2022 WTA Finals championship round on Monday. Garcia advanced from the group stage after beating Coco Gauff and Daria Kasatkina but losing to Iga Swiatek. Maria Sakkari, who had won all three of her group matches in straight sets, was her semifinal opponent. Garcia was the first to go up a break in the first set, leading 3-1, but Sakkari broke back right away to make it 3-2. The French player, however, snatched another break to go 4-2 up and didn’t throw away her lead this time to win the set. Garcia began the second set on a high note, breaking her opponent’s serve twice to lead 4-0. Sakkari was unable to claw her way back into the match, which she lost 6-3, 6-2.

Aryna Sabalenka described her qualification for the WTA Finals as a “miracle” at the start of the week. But, after a huge semifinal upset, her miracle has now extended all the way to the Fort Worth singles final. Sabalenka defeated World No.1 Iga Swiatek 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in a two-hour and seven-minute semifinal match on Sunday night. Sabalenka won her tour-leading 28th three-set match of the season to advance to her third final of the season. Sabalenka won her third career match against a reigning World No.1 in a match that mirrored the US Open semifinal until the final few games.
