Bianca Andreescu, current World No. 53 and former World No. 4, is one of the underdogs in this year’s Canadian Open. She has a great chance of repeating as champion in 2019. However, her fitness and form will be crucial; after battling injury and recovery for the first three months of the season, the 22-year-old Canadian returned to the tour in Stuttgart and has since spent time rebuilding her form. As a result, she is 12-8 with mixed results so far. Her career highlights include a third-round finish in Madrid, a quarterfinal appearance in Rome, and a runner-up finish in Bad Homburg. Alize Cornet, 32, is not the most consistent performer on the tour, but she has her moments and a unique ability to surprise big guns every now and then. She defeated Caroline Garcia 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in an all-French match to set up the match with Andreescu. Except for a few tournaments where she surprised the crowd, Cornet’s season has been defined by early losses. She reached the final eight of the Australian Open after defeating Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep. Similarly, Alize reached the semifinals in Bad Homburg and reached the fourth round of Wimbledon after defeating Iga Swiatek and Yulia Putintseva.
