Ekaterina Alexandrova and Asia Muhammad will face each other in the first round of the 2022 WTA Korea Open September 20.
Alexandrova has already won a title this year, having won the Rosmalen Open on the grass courts earlier this year. However, the Russian’s form has taken a surprising dip since then. Alexandrova has played in five tournaments since winning the title, and she has been knocked out in the second round in all of them. Alexandrova struggled throughout the US Open Series, including the Cincinnati Open, Cleveland Open, and US Open, even in her opening round wins before falling in the second round. On all three occasions, she was defeated by players who entered the match as the second favorites.
Asia Muhammad would be realistic about her expectations from a tournament like this, having never broken into the top 100 on the WTA circuit in her career. A win here and there to boost her ranking is what she wants, but coming up against a player ranked 24th in the world may not be the easiest task. Despite Alexandrova’s obvious difficulties in recent times. Muhammad, on the other hand, will be aware that she has a consistent game that can exploit her opponent’s form issues. Three ITF titles, all on hard court surfaces, make a strong case for Muhammad’s game, and a recent victory over Madison Keys in Toronto shows that her opponents cannot take her for granted.
