Perhaps the two brightest prospects in men’s tennis today, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, will come face to face in the quarter-final of the 2022 US Open under the lights of the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Alcaraz was pushed in the round of 16 on Tuesday where he edged out a 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory against 15th seed and veteran Marin Cilic. The Spaniard hit three aces in the match and recorded six out of 18 break points.

“It was pretty, pretty tough at the beginning of the fifth set [being a] break down. But Marin was playing unbelievable. I believe in myself all the time. Of course the support today in Arthur Ashe [Stadium] was crazy. Without you guys, it wouldn’t be possible to win this match tonight, so thank you very much for the support tonight, thank you,” he said. The victory and Nadal’s earlier exit from the competition gives the third seed an opportunity to be world no. 1 by the end of the Grand Slam.

Eleventh seed Jannik Sinner went up against veteran Belarusian tennis player Ilya Ivashka in the round of 16 on Tuesday. Much like Alcaraz, Sinner was pushed all the way to the fifth seed but the Italian eked out a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory. The 11th seed hit five aces in the contest and recorded 12 out of 26 break points to seal his place in the last eight.
