Cameron Norrie would have had reason to believe he had a chance to go as far as, if not further, after his performance at Wimbledon, where he was a semifinalist. Andrey Rublev, on the other hand, had other plans. The Russian, who had previously struggled to get going, dispatched Norrie in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and six minutes to advance to the US Open quarterfinals. Rublev needed just one break of serve in each of the first two sets to win them, and while he was broken back in the third, a late second break ensured the outcome was clear.
Due to Rafael Nadal in his fourth round match, it appeared that Frances Tiafoe would have to wait until at least the Australian Open of next year to reach a second Grand Slam quarterfinal. After John Isner and Andy Roddick, Tiafoe is the third American to advance to the quarterfinals of the US Open since 2006 after defeating Nadal in four sets. Tiafoe had previously defeated Marcos Giron, Jason Kubler, and Diego Schwartzman in three straight rounds, but this was expected to be a different kettle of fish. And he emerged victorious.
