Wednesday second round of the 2022 ATP Cincinnati Open pits American player Mackenzie McDonald against world number four Carlos Alcaraz.
It was clear that Carlos Alcaraz‘s loss to Tommy Paul in the second round of the Canadian Open last week had more to do with the mental than the physical or technical aspects of the game. The world number four acknowledged at the conclusion of the match that prior to his sudden rise in the rankings, he had not experienced the same kind of pressure. Alcaraz will have to deal with that as he prepares for the Cincinnati Open while juggling expectations for yet another Masters 1000 tournament. And Alcaraz said he is aiming to do what he can do best, which is work hard and turn things around under pressure going into this tournament. Alcaraz won four ATP titles in 2022, including a handful of Masters titles. His goal? to duplicate the success he achieved earlier this year in Miami and throughout the clay court season.
The 73rd-ranked player in the world, Mackenzie McDonald, quickly defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili to get to the second round. In his 53-minute demolition of the dreadfully out-of-sorts Basilashvili, McDonald dropped just one game, slammed eight aces, and didn’t face a single break point. In order to complete the thrashing, he broke Basilashvili six times while winning 18 of the 20 points he played off of his first serve. Being coming off of three straight defeats, including one to Alex Molcan in Montreal, makes this victory all the more significant for McDonald. And although facing the world number four would present a greater challenge for him, he will approach this match with more energy.
Carlos Alcaraz and Mackenzie McDonald are scheduled to face one another in the Opening round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Tuesday, August 16. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 14 till August 21.
The 2022 Cincinnati Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for both men’s and women’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 14 and conclude on August 21 this year.
