Hailing from Xuzhou, Jiangsu, Zhang Yufei entered the world of competitive swimming when she was three years old. Under her mother’s watchful guidance and coaching, she quickly progressed. By five, she was already under professional training with the Jiangsu Swimming Team. At just 14, Zhang stunned everyone by clinching a gold medal in the 200 m butterfly at the 2012 FINA World Cup in Beijing, leaving behind 2008 Olympic gold medalist Liu Zige. This performance was just the beginning as she soon earned a position in China’s national swimming team.
Zhang’s debut on the international stage was at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing. There, she collected a total of five medals, three gold and two silver, and established junior world records in the process. Her golden journey continued at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, in 2014. Zhang’s swimming ensured the Chinese team’s win in the women’s 4 × 100 m freestyle relay with a recorded time of 3:37.25. At the World Championships in Kazan, Russia, the next year, Zhang shattered her own junior world record in the 200 m butterfly and within forty minutes, assisted her team in earning a bronze in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay.
Zhang Yufei continued to excel in her career. At the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018, she showcased her prowess by winning the Women’s 200 m butterfly. She proved her excellence yet again at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 in 2021, where she won silver in the women’s 100 m butterfly and gold medals in the women’s 200 m butterfly and 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, setting records. In 2023, at the Fukuoka World Aquatics Championships, she claimed the gold medal in the 100 m butterfly. Her dominance continued in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, where she secured a total of gold medals and solidified her legacy in the swimming world as one of the finest swimmers in the world.
