Peaty joined the Dove Valley Swimming Club in Uttoxeter when he was nine years old. By the time he was twelve, he was winning competitions and breaking club records. However, former Olympic swimmer Melanie Marshall, whose club Peaty had joined wasn’t impressed by Peaty’s performance in freestyle. When she saw him doing breaststroke, she concluded that he was better suited for breaststroke because of his enormous hands and big feet.

Peaty, alongside David Wilkie, Rebecca Adlington, James Guy, and Duncan Scott, represent the only five British swimmers to have won gold at the four major international competitions (the Olympics, World Championships, European Championships, and Commonwealth Games). He is the only swimmer to have achieved the rare feat of holding all four major gold medals at the same time. Peaty is a six-time European swimmer of the year, having won the title in a row from 2014 to 2019. Besides that, he is a two-time World swimmer of the year in 2015 and 2018.
