Zhang Yufei is a renowned Chinese swimmer who is known for her prowess in sprint freestyle and butterfly races. Born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, started her aquatic journey at the young age of three. With her mother’s guidance and early coaching, she quickly became a sensation in the swimming world. By the age of five, Zhang was already receiving professional training with the Jiangsu Swimming Team and had set multiple records in her age category.
The world witnessed Zhang Yufei’s potential when she dethroned the 2008 Olympic gold medalist Liu Zige in the 200 m butterfly event at the FINA World Cup in Beijing in 2012 at just 14 years old. This performance earned her a spot in China’s national swimming squad the very next year. Her initial international representation was at the Summer Youth Olympics 2014 in Nanjing. There, she clinched three gold and two silver medals and also smashed junior world records.
In the same year, during the Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea, Zhang played a pivotal role in ensuring a victorious finish for the Chinese women’s relay team in the 4 × 100 m freestyle, clocking in at 3:37.25. The following year, at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia, Zhang set a junior world record in the 200 m butterfly and won the bronze medal. She then helped her team to another bronze in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay.
In 2018, Zhang Yufei emerged as the winner in the women’s 200 m butterfly at the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta. Three years later, at the Tokyo Olympics, she not only bagged a silver in the women’s 100 m butterfly but also set world and Olympic records, clinching golds in the Women’s 200 m butterfly and 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. At the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, Zhang consolidated her status as one of the most formidable swimmers globally, winning the women’s individual 50 m freestyle, 50 m butterfly, 100 m butterfly, and 200 m butterfly and contributing to her national team’s victory, securing 6 golds in total.
