Chad Le Clos is a South African swimming sensation who has firmly placed himself among the world’s elite swimmers. He is best known for his prowess in the 200-meter butterfly, holding records across Africa and the Commonwealth both in short and long course. Additionally, in the short course, he is one of the biggest names in the 100-meter butterfly and freestyle. At the Olympics 2012, he claimed the gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly by defeating the legendary Michael Phelps by a mere 0.05 seconds. He clinched the overall male winner title four times, a first for any male swimmer. From 2009 to 2018, he achieved a staggering 143 gold medals, earning him a Guinness World Record.

In 2010, Chad Le Clos made his impression in the Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi, collecting a mix of gold, silver, and bronze medals. His journey continued with a gold at the Dubai World Short Course Championships that year. Moving onto the World Aquatics Championships 2011 in Shanghai, he finished the top 15 across multiple events. The year 2014 saw competing in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, he won seven medals, tying with Roland Schoeman as South Africa’s top performer in the competition’s history. Later that year, in Doha, he earned gold medals in all his individual events, including the 50-meter butterfly and 200-meter freestyle.

His silver in the 200-meter freestyle event at the Olympics placed him behind China’s Sun Yang. But, he soon made a comeback, breaking his records at the World Short Course Championships 2016 in Canada. A year later, he conquered the World Aquatic Swimming Championships, defeating the favorite, László Cseh. In the Commonwealth Games 2018, Chad added more medals to his collection. He ended just one medal short of the all-time record, shared by shooters Phillips Adams and Mick Gault. In 2019, as a member of the International Swimming League, he led the Energy Standard Swim Club to victory. His outstanding performance in London also saw him named MVP. In 2021, he represented South Africa, carrying the national flag during Tokyo’s Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
