Hailing from the Welsh town of Cwm, close to Ebbw Vale, Mark Williams is a renowned snooker player. He began his journey with a junior event victory at the age of eleven. When he was thirteen, he achieved his first-century break. At the age of eighteen, he had notched up a perfect 147 break. Before dedicating himself to snooker, Williams also showed promise in amateur boxing as he had secured a record of twelve wins with no losses. His father, who worked as a miner, played a pivotal role in his life, as he encouraged him to take up the sport.
Williams has been a professional snooker player since 1992, earning the name “The Welsh Potting Machine” for his impeccable potting skills. With three World Championship titles to his name, his most remarkable season was 2002–03 when he captured the Triple Crown and achieved a feat only Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry had managed before him. Moreover, he has claimed every professional form of the World Championship including the World Snooker Championship, the Six-red World Championship, and the World Seniors Championship.
With a total of 25 ranking tournament wins, including two UK Championships and two Masters titles, Williams is listed among the all-time greats of snooker. Despite a dip in performance following his 2003 World Championship win, he regained his top 16 ranking in the 2009–10 season. At the age of 47, he scored the oldest maximum break at the English Open in 2022. In the next year, his British Open victory at 48 years old placed him as the second-oldest ranking tournament winner.
Williams is a proud Welshman, evident from his tattoo featuring the Welsh Dragon. Beyond snooker, he enjoys poker and golf, and he is a dedicated Manchester United fan. His friends include fellow snooker professionals and the renowned boxer Joe Calzaghe. In recognition of his snooker achievements, he was honored with an MBE in June 2004. He is one of the three members popularly called as ‘Class of 92’ who became professionals during the 1992-93 season, besides Ronnie O’Sullivan and John Higgins.
