Indian Sporting Calendar 2023: Month of June

Indian sportspersons have been doing exceptionally well in sports tournaments. On May 31 st, 2023, it was a great day for Indian sports and their fans as an unknown talent Kiran George defeated the world no. 9 Shi Yuqi in Badminton. In track and field, Neeraj Chopra took India to new heights as he became the world no. 1 in the rankings of world athletics. Ace Indian shuttler HS Prannoy also finished first to bring back the gold medal to our country. The athletes are constantly bringing glory to the nation and will continue to do so in June as well. Let’s take a look at some of the significant international events which will feature Indian athletes in June.

World Ranking Series (Sport – Boxing, Date- June 1 to June 4, 2023)

The Indian contingent including 30 wrestlers is set to head out to Kyrgyzstan for the upcoming 3rd Ranking Series “Kaba Uulu Kozhomkul and Raatbek Sanatbaev” event in Bishkek. The Bishkek Ranking Series will be attended by more than 400 wrestlers. The third Ranking Series of the year will be headlined by 29 continental champions who won gold medals in the recently concluded championships across the world. India will be without the services of many veteran players, in the absence of which the squad will be led by Olympic silver medalist Ravi Kumar who is in a championship after a long time due to MCL and ACL injuries. The women’s side will be led by the Asian Championship gold medalist Sarita Mor. The Indian side is mostly a mix of veterans as well as novices of the game.

French Open (Sport – Lawn Tennis, Date- May 22 to June 11, 2023)

The French Open also known as the Roland- Garros tournament is one of the most important tournaments in the calendar that the Indian athletes are gearing up for. It is a major tennis tournament held over two weeks at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, beginning in late May each year. The French Open is the premier clay court championship in the world and the only Grand Slam tournament currently held on this surface. It is chronologically the second of the four annual Grand Slam tournaments, occurring after the Australian Open and before Wimbledon and the US Open. The Indian contingent will comprise veterans like Rohan Bopanna, Ankita Sinha, and Yuki Bhambri to be named a few.

Thailand Open (Sport – Badminton, Date- May 30 to June 4, 2023)

For badminton enthusiasts, one of the key tournaments that will be up for grabs is the Thailand Open. The 2023 Thailand Open is a badminton tournament that will be taken place at Indoor Stadium Huamark in Bangkok, Thailand, from 30 May to 4 June 2023. The tournament has a total prize pool of $420,000. Many young and promising talents like Ashmita Chaliha, Priyanshu Rajawat along with veterans like PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal etc will be at the centre stage of the action.
