Arjun Erigasi becomes India's no. 1 surpassing Viswanathan Anand

Arjun Erigaisi has become the top-ranked chess player in India and is currently ranked 9th in the world, surpassing Vishy Anand.

Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi, a 20-year-old chess player, has become the highest-ranked Indian. Surpassing Viswanathan Anand, a legendary player who held the top spot for many years. Erigaisi’s achievements demonstrate the uprise of young Indian chess players.

Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi recently gained 8.3 Elo rating points by participating in the 5th Shengzhen Masters and Bundesliga West. In the FIDE Rating list, he holds the position of World No. 9 and India’s No. 1 as of April 2024. Currently, he is participating in the GRENKE Chess Open 2024. Where he scored 6 out of 7 and is trailing three leaders by half a point.

On April 1st, Arjun Erigaisi climbed to the top spot on the Indian ranking list, currently ranked ninth in the world. He is the second Indian, after D Gukesh, to surpass Vishy Anand as India’s number one.

As per the latest FIDE ratings, Erigaisi has become the new India no. 1 and World no. 9 chess player. Currently, there are four Indian players in the Top 16, five in the Top 25. And eight in the Top 41. In the women’s ranking, Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, and Vaishali Rameshbabu are among the top 20.

Meanwhile, Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh and Vidit Santosh Gujrathi are the other top Indian chess players. These three players will be competing in the Candidates chess tournament this week. Which will decide the challenger for the World Chess Championship title currently held by Magnus Carlsen.

Currently, India ranks second in terms of the average rating of the top 10 players.
