The Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medalist Bindyarani Devi won the silver medal with a total effort of 194kg (83 kg+111 kg) in the non-Olympic 55kg category. Commonwealth Games silver medalist Bindyarani Devi aggregated 194kg to secure the silver medal in the women’s 55kg category at the Asian weightlifting championships in Jinju on Saturday. Bindyarani lifted 83kg in her second snatch attempt and 111kg in her second clean and jerk effort to come second behind 18-year-old Chinese Taipei lifter Chen Guan Ling, who took the top honour with a total of 204kg (snatch 90kg, clean and jerk 114kg). Bindyarani tried 115 kg in her final attempt to win the No. 1 spot in clean and jerk, but she could not hit her goal.

The Indian lifter finished second in the final round of competition after placing fourth in the first. Bronze went to Vo Thi Quynh Nhu of Vietnam (88 kg, 104 kg, 192 kg). Shubham Todkar (116kg, 147kg, 263) ranked 10th overall in the men’s 61kg weight division while competing in Group B.
Due to an injury, she suffered before the selection trials, the Manipuri was forced to compete in her original 55kg weight division. She switched to the 59kg weight class for the World Championships last year, where she placed 25th, and this weight class will be featured in the Paris Olympics. Head coach Vijay Sharma insisted before the competition that the goal was to have Bindyarani simply participate in the competition. This is one of the qualifying events for the Paris Olympics and will test the potential of the athletes during the Asian Games later in the year. She must compulsorily compete in both the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.

A lifter must compete in three of the following additional events in addition to the two mentioned above: the 2022 World Championships, 2023 Continental Championships, 2023 Grand Prix I, 2023 Grand Prix II, and 2024 Continental Championships. Mirabai Chanu and Bindyarani must now compete in one more event in addition to the two required ones, having already competed here and at the World Championships last year. After the qualification period, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) will publish the Olympic Qualification Rating (OQR) for each weight category. For the final evaluation, the weightlifter’s top three results from the qualifying competitions will be considered.
After winning the Asian Weightlifting Championships on Saturday, Bindyarani Devi was unable to reach her family in the state because mobile internet services were cut off as a result of the ethnic unrest. The Weightlifter was informed on Sunday by the Army that it is prepared to assist her in establishing contact with her parents and other family members. The Army has been stationed in Manipur to protect residents from the violence there and rescue approximately 25,000 civilians from various communities who were relocated to its bases and garrisons.
Bindyarani’s silver medals in clean and jerk and overall event in the women’s 55kg helped India collect two silver medals. Later, Jeremy Lalrinnunga won the silver medal in the men’s 67kg snatch category but failed to register a successful lift in the clean and jerk event. The Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 gold medalist and Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Mirabai Chanu finished sixth, while another CWG champion Achinta Sheuli finished 10th in the men’s 73kg. With this, India ended its campaign at the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 with three silvers.
