Indian weightlifters Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy Lalrinnunga, and Achinta Sheuli will head the Indian delegation to the Asian weightlifting championships in Jinju, South Korea, from May 3 to May 13, 2023. The competition will give the competitors a crucial chance to practice their skills before the Asian Games 2022 to be held in September. On April 28, the team will fly to Jinju to compete in the championships. The competition will provide Indian weightlifters the chance to compare their abilities to those of the best athletes in Asia and improve their tactics at the Asian Games 2022.

Commonwealth Games 2022 champions back to the team

Mirabai Chanu, who clinched the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting category, has recovered from a wrist injury and achieved 89 kg in snatch for the first time during the trials. According to the chief National coach Vijay Sharma, the target is to cross 200 kg without pushing her too much to prepare for the Asian Games. Mirabai has previously won a bronze medal at the Asian Championships in the 2020 edition held in Tashkent. She is also a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist and a World Championship champion, having won the event in 2017 in the women’s 48kg.

Achinta Sheuli, another Commonwealth Games 2022 champion in the men’s 73 kg weightlifting category, has also recovered from his back issue and is set to compete in the championships.
