Mirabai Chanu is one of the top contenders to win a Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
From carrying a bundle of firewood in her childhood to becoming an Olympic medallist, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is currently one of the biggest sporting stars in India. On July 24, 2021, Mirabai Chanu ended India’s 21-year drought for a weightlifting medal at the biggest multi-sport event, the Olympics, through her extraordinary performance in Tokyo Olympics 2020. With this, she created history by winning India’s first-ever Silver medal in Weightlifting at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Before her accomplishment, it was India’s Iron Lady, Karnam Malleshwari who had secured the first Weightlifting medal for the country in the form of a Bronze medal in the Sydney Olympics 2020.
Mirabai sealed a berth for the Commonwealth Games 2022 after ensuring India a Gold medal in the 55 kg category at Singapore Weightlifting International. Competing in her first international event post-Tokyo Olympics 2020, she lifted a total of 191 kg, 86 kg in the snatch event, and 105 kg in the clean and jerk event and finished at the top of the podium. However, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) didn’t accept Mirabai’s entry in the 55kg category of CWG as according to the rules, only the current number 1 lifter of the country (Bindyarani Devi) will be allowed to compete in the event. So, Mirabai will now be competing in her usual weight category (49 kg) which now makes the 27-year-old one of the heavy favorites for the Commonwealth Games 2022.
