The Indian Premier League (IPL), since its inception in 2008, has grown manifolds and attracted players from across the cricketing nations to become the biggest T20 franchise league in the world.

Now, in a major development, it is understood that the IPL 2022 tickets to watch a live match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is more expensive than a group game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.

The price for a Spain vs Germany league game at the 2022 FIFA World Cup stands at 250 Qatari Rial (about Rs 5,211 in Indian currency) while the price of mid-level tickets for an IPL match at the Wankhede Stadium is almost double that.

Incidentally, the ticket applications for the 2022 FIFA World Cup were the seventh-most among other countries for the global sporting event.

“India provides a goldmine of absolutely first-class football supporters. We all know about the love for cricket in India but I think the world is starting to wake up to its love for football as well,” John Parker from BH Hospitality, official FIFA partners, explained to the Indian Express.

“If I was three hours away from the biggest festival of football… the chance of you being that close to the World Cup without hosting it is almost going to be impossible.” The announcement of the draw saw massive online logjams as the second round of random selection for ticket sales got underway.

It is notable that the ticket for the biggest game of the world’s most popular sport, the football World Cup final, will cost Rs 45,828 which amounts to only Rs. 10,000 more than the most expensive IPL ticket.

The IPL media rights, meanwhile, will be sold in four separate buckets for the first time. The BCCI has made it clear that no consolidated bid for all four buckets will be entertained and said that the bidding parties will have to separately bid for each package.

Multi-millionaire giants TV18-Viacom, Disney, Amazon interested and Sony have bought the Invitation-To-Tender (ITT) for the e-auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights for 2023-27, indicating early interest in the deal, with American Tech giants Apple supposedly set to join next week according to a report in the Times of India.
