The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 extravaganza is set to unfold from March 26, Saturday, with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) crossing swords in the inaugural contest at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. A total number of 70 league matches and 4 Playoff games will be played in the duration of 65 days. All the matches will be played in Mumbai and Pune with the iconic Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium holding 20 matches each while Brabourne and MCA International stadium, Pune, playing host to 15 fixtures each.

Each stadium will bring a different dimension to the game due to its location, surrounding bodies and pitch surface. The Wankhede Stadium and Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai pitches are made up of red soil while the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune will be  a black-soil surface. Let us, however, have a closer look at how each of these pitches can offer during IPL 2022.

Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

The Wankhede Stadium will be expected to carry a lot of bounce providing assistance to the seamers. It will be expected from the franchise captain’s to take their decision during the toss depending upon the dew especially during the night matches. Batters who like to get the scoreboard ticking from the word go can also be hugely benefited at Wankhede. The short boundaries at the iconic stadium will be easy to clear for them.

Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai

Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai can be expected to be host to high-scoring affairs. The quick outfield will only make run scoring easier on this surface. However, as the lucrative tournament progresses, spinners can benefit from the pitch due to wear and tear of the surface with heat coming into play in the summer conditions.

DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai

The bigger boundaries will be a challenge at the DY Patil Stadium for the batters and bowlers can pounce on it to pick up wickets at regular intervals of time. The pitch can witness moderate scoring matches with around 140-odd runs put on by the team batting first and don’t be surprised if they end up defending the total!

MCA Stadium, Pune

The MCA Stadium in Pune will have black soil which means that the franchises will be keen to use the spinners during the day game and reap benefits out of them. It is also the only venue among the four selected for IPL 2022 where spinners can be brought into the attack early.
