IPL 2022 MS Dhoni-Gautam Gambhir: A 'no-love lost' saga

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir might have been vocal about ex-India captain's 2011 World Cup final six garnering more attention than his 97-run knock but his gesture during the LSG vs CSK contest in the IPL 2022 showed that there is no-love lost between the heroes of Indian cricket.

Indian cricket history has been graced with plenty of heroes for their on-field efforts and the likes of former India captain MS Dhoni and ex-opener Gautam Gambhir made entry to the list in the modern times.

Dhoni and Gambhir have been match-winners at their own peril. While the veteran wicket keeper-batter led the national team to the top Test rankings for the first time besides winning three major trophies; Gambhir remains one of the best openers to don the Indian jersey and played an important role in the final of the 2007 World Twenty20 (75 runs from 54 balls) and the 2011 World Cup (97 off 122).

However, Gambhir, has been vocal and showed his agitation about the Indian cricket fans celebrating Dhoni’s six to seal the 2011 World Cup more often and forgetting that it was a team effort in the process. It was, in fact, his crucial 109-run partnership with Dhoni that led India to their second win in 50-over World Cup.

“The World Cup was won by entire India, entire Indian team & all support staff. High time you hit your obsession for a SIX,” Gambhir had reacted on a social media post which said that Dhoni’s six won India the World Cup.

“Do you think that only one individual won us the World Cup? If one individual could have won the World Cup, then India could have won all the World Cups till now. Unfortunately, in India, it’s only about worshipping certain individuals. I’ve never believed in that. In a team sport, individuals have no place. It’s all about contributions,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

IPL 2022: MS Dhoni-Gautam Gambhir show mutual respect

But even though Gambhir has shown his sentiments, there is hardly any question that the duo are utmost professionals, and have mutual respect for one another. A testament to that could be LSG mentor’s gesture towards CSK after the IPL 2022 contest on Thursday as well-documented in the video.

The former India opener also posted some pictures of the discussion on his Instagram account soon after the match with a caption saying, “It was nice catching up skipper!”

Earlier, in an interview, Gambhir had clarified that he has utmost respect for the former India captain and will stand by him if he ever needs any help in life for his contribution to the national team and his ethics as a human being.

“See I have so much of mutual respect for him and it’ll always remain. I’ve said it on air, I’ll say it on your channel, I can say it anywhere in front of 138 crore people, that if ever in need, I hope he’s never in need, but if ever in need in life, I’ll be the first one standing next to him because of what he’s done for Indian cricket, what he’s as a human being,” Gambhir told Jatin Sapru on his YouTube show ‘Over and Out’
