In 2018, Chennai Super Kings were making a comeback after being banned for two years due to the spot-fixing scandal. But, thanks to the guidance of MS Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings did the impossible. Armed with players who were over 30 years of age in the side, Chennai Super Kings gave ‘Dad’s Army’ a whole new twist as they won the IPL title in grand style.
The same thing repeated in IPL 2021. Chennai Super Kings had failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 2020. They finished seventh primarily because two of their stalwarts quit before the start of the tournament. Prior to the league, the coronavirus pandemic ravaged the squad with several key members missing. But, in IPL 2021, after a shaky start, they bounced back in the UAE leg and won the tournament in grand style by beating Kolkata Knight Riders.

The mega auction might have changed the dynamics of many sides. But, in the case of the Chennai Super Kings, this did not happen. The likes of Dwayne Bravo, Robin Uthappa, Mitchell Santner, and Ambati Rayudu were retained. For the first time, Chennai Super Kings broke the bank for Deepak Chahar and paid him Rs 14 crore. However, the pacer might be ruled out for a big chunk of the IPL as he has suffered a quadriceps injury.
The likes of Chris Jordan, Dwaine Pretorius, and Adam Milne might be needed to shore up the bowling that looks a little weak. With Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja at their disposal, the spin department is sorted. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway will be the key with the bat. But, everything will hinge on MS Dhoni, who continues to be the ultimate master tactician.
