Injured Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will join the Delhi Capitals camp to continue recovery from the low-grade hip flexor injury he sustained in Lahore. His recovery remains a major concern for Delhi Capitals as he was one of the seven overseas players picked up by the franchise for IPL 2022.

However, if Marsh fails to recover in the ongoing season, it will deplete Delhi Capitals’ overseas players’ resources. Marsh and Australia opener David Warner originally expected to join the squad from April 6.

Marsh will continue his rehabilitation under former Australia and current New South Wales physiotherapist Patrick Farhart who has been with Delhi Capitals since the IPL 2020 season. He will also take care of South Africa fast bowler Anrich Nortje’s recovery.

“Being able to focus on my recovery without the travel and isolation break is the best approach. I am disappointed to miss the Pakistan series but look forward to re-joining the Australian squad for our next tour,” Marsh said in a Cricket Australia statement on Wednesday.

Marsh underwent scans on Monday which revealed his left-hip injury, which he had sustained during fielding drills on Sunday.

“Scans confirmed the injury was a low-grade hip flexor strain. Marsh will be managed clinically with a view to potentially returning to play later in the series,” a Cricket Australia statement said.

Australia limited-overs captain Aaron Finch said that Marsh’s availability for the entire ODI series against Pakistan looks in doubt due to the injury. And Marsh was subsequently ruled out of the ODI and T20I series.

“He’s injured his hip-flexor, we think, at training. We are going to have to wait and see what that looks like but I don’t think he’ll be available for the series based on how he was feeling yesterday,” Finch told reporters on Monday morning.

“He sustained that in a fielding drill, it was a high intensity, lateral movement drill and he bent down to pick it up one-handed and went to throw and felt a twinge.”

The Australian has a history of missing out on IPL due to injury. He was ruled out of  the entire season in IPL 2020 for Sunrisers Hyderabad after hurting his ankle in the first match while he didn’t participate in IPL 2021 due to bubble fatigue and was subsequently replaced by Jason Roy.
