Asian Games 2022: Twitter reacts as Indian hockey team thrashes Singapore 16-1

India thrashed Singapore 16-1 in the second match of their Asian Games campaign as captain Harmanpreet Singh scored 4 goals.

India has seen recent resurgence in the hockey circuit. It is very evident in the way the rankings have improved for the men’s team. Currently, the men’s team is ranked in the third place in the world ranking. On the other hand, in the Asian Rankings, India is the top ranked team. Naturally, everyone anticipated that India will do fairly well. Subsequently, India has performed exceedingly well. In the opening match, India thrashed Uzbekistan (16-0). Then again, today was the turn of Singapore to get thrashed (16-1). On a close look at the pool table, India tops the chart with their arch-rivals, Pakistan at the second place. But, the most interesting thing is that, India has the highest goal difference from two matches in the table (+31).

What happened in the match?

Captain Harmanpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh had a fine outing with an impressive 7 goals cumulatively. Harmanpreet scored 4 goals and led the charge in the 16-goal hammering. On the other hand, Mandeep Singh secured a hat trick. India started with a lacklustre first quarter. However, after that India shifted their gear and took on a mammoth 6-0 lead over Singapore at the half-time mark. Mandeep scored twice, and Lalit, Gurjant, Sumit, and Vivek all added one each to the goal tally. India continued their relentless attack, scoring five more goals in the third quarter. Subsequently, the Indian men’s hockey team asserted their dominance. A total of nine players contributed to the scoresheet. Varun Kumar and Abhishek also made their mark in the second half.

This victory adds to India’s commanding performance at the ongoing Asian Games. India showed why they are the top-ranked nation in Asia. Earlier, the Indian team also thumped Uzbekistan 16-0 in their opening day match and now the massive win against Singapore. The next opponent are the defending champions of the tournament from Jakarta, Japan (September 28). However, India’s most awaited clash will be against their fiercest rival, Pakistan on September 30. The group stage campaign for India will conclude on October 2 with a game against Bangladesh.
