The Indian women’s hockey team has started their Asian Games campaign with a resounding victory against Singapore. The Indian women’s hockey team is currently ranked seventh in the FIH Rankings. On the other hand, Singapore is ranked 34th. Naturally, India had the advantage heading into the match and women in blue showed that prowess as well. With the win, the Indian women’s hockey team climbed to the top of the Pool A standings. The top two teams from each Pool will qualify for the semi-finals. The Indian women’s hockey team will play Malaysia next at the Asian Games 2023 on Friday. 

What happened in the match?

The Indian women’s hockey team led by goalkeeper Savita Punia put up a brilliant show as it defeated Singapore 13-0 in its opening Pool A match at the 19th Asian Games on Wednesday. Ten different Indian players scored in the match. Subsequently, India will next play Malaysia on September 29 at 4 PM Indian Standard Time. Talking about the opening fixture, the women in blue showed their prowess in the field. Going into the half-time, the women’s team were ahead by 8-0 against the Singapore team. In the end, the lead widened even more to a 13-0 scoreline.

Five minutes into the match, India was awarded a penalty corner. Subsequently, Udita drag-flicked it past the Singapore goalkeeper to put her team in front. Then, before Singapore could regroup, India scored two more in quick succession. Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam and Deepika both found the net in the first quarter. In the closing minutes of the opening quarter, Navneet Kaur netted a brace to make the scoreline 5-0 in India’s favour. The Indian team began the second quarter with the same intent. Deep Grace Ekka and Neha added two more goals to India’s tally before Sangita slotted home for India’s eight of the match. India led 8-0 at the halfway mark.

After the change of ends, the Indian team kept control of the match and continued to add to their tally in the second half. Salima Tete, Sangita Kumari, Vandana Katariya and Monika notched up five goals in the last two quarters to wrap up a big win for India. While Sangita Kumari finished with a hat-trick.
