In a Chinese Super League (CSL) top-of-the-table clash, Wuhan Three Towns will take on Shanghai Shenhua at Puwan Stadium on Sunday. The hosts are heading into the tie on the back of a comfortable 2-1 win over Guangzhou last Thursday, while, a day before, Shanghai Shenhua were held to a 1-1 draw by Shanghai Port. The Wuhan Three Towns currently sit at the summit of the standings with 19 points from 7 games, while the visitors are in second place, just two points behind the leaders.
On Thursday, at Jinzhou stadium, Pedro Morilla’s side continued their impressive start to the season by coming from behind to earn all three points against Guangzhou. Although it was the hosts who took the lead through Dinghao Yan’s 21st minute penalty, Nicolae Stanciu equalised two minutes later before Pengfei Xie struck in the 48th minute to turn the game on its head. The newly promoted side have been simply brilliant this season, winning six of their opening seven games to sit at the summit of the league standings.
Shanghai Shenhua, on the other hand, dropped points for only the second time this season when Zhi Jianrong’s 19th-minute opener was canceled out by Cherif Ndiaye’s 90th-minute penalty strike. Like the league leaders, Shanghai Shenhua are unbeaten this season, having won five of their opening six games. Wu Jingui’s side last tasted defeat on December 2021 against Henan Longmen (2-0)
Wuhan Three Towns’ attacking midfielder Stanciu, who has eight goals to his name this season, is one of the key players to watch out for. He should be joined at the middle of the park by Xiaobing Zhang, while Ademilson and Luo would occupy the flanks. Davidson is expected to lead the attack alongside Marcao. As for Shanghai Shenhua, Roufab Liu has returned from a two-game injury layoff and is available for selection. Bassagog and Zhu are likely to form the strike-partnership with Wang and Sun pulling the strings from the midfield.
