Wigan Athletic will play host to Millwall in an EFL Championship fixture at DW Stadium on Saturday, knowing that a defeat would confirm their relegation to League One. The hosts are currently languishing at the bottom (24th spot) of the English second tier standings having collected just 37 points from 43 games, seven adrift of safety. The visitors, meanwhile, are sitting at the fifth position, with 65 points to their name, just two points clear of seventh-placed West Bromwich Albion, who have a game in hand. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of contrasting results in their respective mid-week fixtures, with Wigan edging past Stoke City 1-0, while the visitors suffered a narrow 1-0 loss against Birmingham City. Meanwhile, the reverse fixture between these two sides at the Den in December last year ended in a 1-1 draw.

Wigan secured their ninth league-win of the season against Stoke City on Tuesday night thanks to Will Keane’s lone goal nine minutes into the second half. The result ended their three game losing streak and kept their survival chances alive. With just three games remaining, the task at hand for Shaun Maloney’s side are still enormous and they will need to find their shooting boots at the DW Stadium on Saturday to avoid an immediate return to the third tier following their League One title last season. On a positive note, Wigan managed to secure narrow 1-0 wins over Millwall on their last two visits to the DW.
Millwall, on the other hand, lost out to Birmingham last time out, courtesy of Lukas Jutkiewecz’s lone goal in the first half. Prior to that, the Lions defeated Preston North End 2-0 thanks to goals from Tom Bradshaw and Zian Flemming. Although, it was John Eustace’s side’s first win from their last six outings, they have won 18 league-matches this term. Despite taking just five points from their last six matches, the Lions are remain in the top six courtesy of poor-form of the playoff chasing pack. Meanwhile, Millwall’s away-from hasn’t been very great this season, having won only seven of their 21 league-matches on the road so far.
