Joel Matip, born on August 8, 1991, is a professional footballer who plays as a center-back for Liverpool in the Premier League. Matip started his professional career with Schalke 04 in 2009. He was part of the team that won the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup in 2011. During his time at Schalke, he made 258 appearances and scored 23 goals. In 2016, Matip joined Liverpool on a free transfer. He played a significant role in Liverpool’s victory in the 2019 UEFA Champions League, as well as winning the UEFA Super Cup and the 2019–20 Premier League.

Matip was born in Germany but represented Cameroon in international football. Matip began his football journey with SC Weitmar 45 and later moved to VfL Bochum in 1997. In 2000, Schalke 04 scouted him. He made his Bundesliga debut in November 2009, scoring on his debut and quickly becoming a regular starter. He signed a contract extension with Schalke in 2010 and played a key role in their UEFA Champions League campaign in 2010–11.
Matip joined Liverpool in 2016. He made his debut in August 2016 and scored his first goal for the club in October. Matip initially declined a call-up to the Cameroon national team for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations but later represented Cameroon in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He also played in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. In January 2017, Matip was selected for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations but declined the call-up, leading to confusion regarding his international status. Matip had retired from the national team while at Schalke but did not follow the correct procedure. He cited dissatisfaction with the national team setup and coaching staff as reasons for his retirement.
