ATK Mohun Bagan head coach Juan Ferrando was disappointed with his side’s 1-0 loss to Jamshedpur FC on Monday. The result helped JFC to lift the Indian Super League (ISL) Winner’s shield while ATKMB settled for a third-spot at the end of the league stage. Ritwink Das’ 56th minute strike separated both teams and helped JFC to take their tally to 43 points, the most achieved by any team at the end of the league phase of a ISL season. Meanwhile it was the Mariners’ first loss in 15 games.

Once again, it was a very strong defensive performance from the Men of steel and ATKMB found it really hard to break their back line. The Mariners created 17 chances and hit the target on eight occasions but JFC’s defence led by Peter Hartley stood firm and goalkeeper TP Rehenesh had an impressive game to secure his sixth clean sheet of the season.

JFC’s back-four and the two defensive midfielders in front of them were so compact and well disciplined that they gave away very little space for the opponents to work with. They were putting their body on the line and worked their socks off.

In the post-match press conference, the ATKMB head coach said: “Of course, we are not feeling very good. We had one opportunity in this last game we knew it was not going to be easy, because for us it was necessary to win by 2-0. We tried to do everything but we didn’t succeed. But I think it’s necessary to think about the semi-final game now.”

This was Juan Ferrando’s first loss as the coach of ATKMB. Reflecting on the defeat before going into the semis, he said: “To be honest, right now I don’t know. I need one-two hours and I’ll take a shower.

“But yes, then we need to be ready for the next game that is the semi-final. Of course, as a team after this defeat we are not feeling good. But tomorrow is a new day as a head coach, I need to push the players and the coaching staff and get them ready for Saturday’s match.”

ATKMB will next face Hyderabad FC in the two-legged semi-final. The first leg will be played at GMC Athletic Stadium in Bambolim on Saturday while the second leg will be played at the same venue four days later.
